Renewable energy changes 'look glacial but are moving'

PUBLIC engagement is behind posters about the development of renewable energy in the island.

The Commerce and Employment Department's renewable energy team has placed a series of posters at the airport detailing its work.

Chairman Jeremy Thompson said there was plenty of opportunity for such energy in Guernsey.

'The availability of renewable sources of energy in Guernsey is tremendous, it is just harnessing it,' he said.

'What we have done is put some information out about where the technology is and what we have been doing in Guernsey.'

The posters detail how the technologies are developing and maturing, which countries are embracing them and where these could be utilised in the island. Although offshore wind was a possibility, onshore remained problematic because of the population distribution.

Renewable energy resource officer Peter Barnes said work was being progressed, but due to the developing nature of the sector it might seem to outside observers that it was moving at a glacial pace.
