Outgoing deputies reflect on their time over the last term

GOVERNMENT finances must continue to be kept under the microscope, outgoing deputies have said, as the islanders go to the polls today to elect the new States.

States members who will not be returning to the political arena, also anticipated the controversial decision to remove the 11-plus would return to the table.

Social Security minister Allister Langlois was also among those to applaud the work undertaken over the past four years.

He said a big achievement had been 'making the first steps to looking long term and changes to pension arrangements for both States employees and the old age pension'.

'Tough decisions are now going to have to be made between the level of services and the level of taxation,' he said.

'GST will come. There are only a certain number of options and GST is the fairest way.'
