Plane spotters' parking limited due to landing mast interference

PART of a car park favoured by plane spotters has been closed to ensure vehicles do not interfere with the signal of a newly-installed antenna.

The antenna, part of the instrument landing system, was recently placed to help aircraft approaching the runway from the east in low visibility.

All antenna have a safety zone around them to avoid disturbance, and it is thought that part of the large car park to the north of the runway, along La Villiaze Road, now falls within that of the new antenna.

While modelling is carried out to ascertain the extent of the safety zone, half of the car park has been closed to the public.

Guernsey Airport director Colin Le Ray said: 'As a result of the work we need to make a reassessment of a safety zone around the new mast to avoid any disruption to signal.

'As a temporary precaution it is simpler for us to close that end of the car park – it avoids people unknowingly parking in a position that could disrupt the mast's signal.'

Mr Le Ray said he expected it would take between three and four weeks to complete the modelling of the new safety zone, at which point a permanent fence will most likely be installed across a portion of the car park.
