Foster carers wanted for children with extra needs

CARING homes are needed for young people with extreme challenging behaviour or complex additional needs and disabilities, under a new specialist foster carers scheme.

The initiative is being driven by the island's Family Placement Service, with the aim that it can reduce the number of children and teenagers placed in residential provision or sent to off-island care.

Applicants would have to be out of work, or prepared to give up their job, to help provide the support and care needed under the 'rewarding' new role, in which they would likely provide a home for a sole placement.

It is just one of a number of foster carer roles where extra people are needed, along with mainstream foster carers, respite foster carers, and for the short-break care service.

Senior social work practitioner Kate Gallienne said they really wanted to increase the pool of foster carers available in Guernsey, including through its new specialist foster carers initiative and the important provision this provided.

'These children deserve to be part of a family and deserve a family to look after them,' she said.
