Plans to build on The Oaks are welcomed

PEOPLE living near a redundant States-owned site in St Sampson's have backed plans to build houses on it, but have raised traffic and other concerns.

The Guernsey Housing Association has submitted a planning application to build at The Oaks site in Baubigny Road.

The application is for five two-bed houses and five with three bedrooms, each with individual gardens and car parking.

People living nearby spoken to by the Guernsey Press said they were pleased something was being done with the site, although other issues raised included whether they would be overlooked from the new houses, a loss of parking and traffic.

Franklin, 87, and Esme Marquis, 85, have lived in Baubigny Road for 53 years. They had no problem with the development, but Mrs Marquis was worried about the houses being built high and hoped people would not be able to overlook their property.

Martin Austen, 42, has lived in Clos de Bordage for nearly nine years and said the site had been empty since they moved there.

He said they wondered if they would lose part of their garden for parking.

But Mr Austen added that the development would mean he would no longer have to cut back weeds which were growing over the fence.

GHA chief executive Steve Williams said that with regard to that, it might be changing the kerb area but it would talk with any residents affected.
