Election was illegal, claim unsuccessful candidates

SIX unsuccessful candidates from last month's general election have written a letter to the registrar general of electors saying that support given to women candidates made the vote 'illegal'.

The group of men, led by St Peter Port South candidate Neil Forman, say that the Power of the Voice events and the partially States-funded Women2Win campaign put male candidates at a disadvantage.

Organisers of the events, as well as several of the newly-elected female deputies, have refuted the letter's claims, with several saying that spending States money on efforts to bring more diversity to government was justified.

Mr Forman, who placed sixth in his district behind two women candidates, said the letter was sent after several candidates felt women standing for election were given an unfair advantage.

'It's to air our concerns – we do feel that the States have broken their own law.'
