Philippa Stahelin was speaking in support of the Pride of Guernsey Overcoming Adversity Award.

The College of Further Education-sponsored award is one of 12 brand-new accolades awards from the Guernsey Press aimed at celebrating those who do extraordinary things every day but who rarely get the recognition.

This award aims to celebrate their achievement of 'the impossible' and how in overcoming their adversity they offer hope and inspiration to others in our community.

Through Mrs Stahelin's work with local charity Headway Guernsey Guernsey, she has met many people who have had their own battles with the effects of a brain injury, as well as working with their families.

She hoped that through such recognition, they could be helped to feel they are not alone, that there is a positive side of life.

Mrs Stahelin said that every day Headway sees the successes of those it helps who go to Headway.

'A huge part is celebrating and acknowledging this,' she said.

She said it was really good to be on people's journeys and that the sort of people who may have overcome adversity may not regard themselves as 'heroes'.

'They never see themselves as the hero role,' she said.

Mrs Stahelin encouraged anyone who knew of someone who had overcome adversity to put them forward for this award.

'Let's celebrate what you have done.'
