Katina Jones, 61, has been described as a 'brave lady' by Andrew Pouteaux, from the Art of Living community volunteers, who put her forward for the College of Further Education-sponsored award.

Mrs Jones said she was waiting for a knee replacement and has 'a lot of arthritis'.

She said she has good days but when it is a bad day, she feels awful and it 'knocks her for six'.

Mrs Jones said she has been suffering with her knees for about eight years.

Some of the Art of Living group's work involves supporting the parishes which are entering the Britain in Bloom competition.

St Peter Port is one of those this year.

'Katina has difficulty walking and is in constant pain,' Mr Pouteaux said.

'As head of St Peter Port Floral, she leads her team year after year.

'She hobbles around the streets looking for entrants in the garden competition bright eyed and smiling.

'Her Christian faith supports her.'

He added that he has worked with Mrs Jones for the last three or four years.
