The unsuccessful male candidates had argued that States financial support for a campaign aimed at encouraging more women to stand breached election law.

The States Assembly and Constitution Committee paid £2,250 towards a skills course.

Yesterday, Mark de Garis, who was registrar general of electors at the time of the election, told the six complainants that the matter would not be investigated further because the Women2Win events were held before anyone officially became a candidate.

Martyn Roussel, a signatory of the letter, who ran for election in St Sampson's, but narrowly missed out on seat, said not all questions had been answered.

'It's not going to answer the questions of what involvement the States should have and what impacts this will have.'

He added that clarity over the law would need to be delivered before the next election.

'I won't take it any further and I am happy to accept the outcome of the election, but it's important to show solidarity with friends,' he said.

'What we brought up was an issue, and it needs to be resolved before the next election.'
