Campaigners vow to continue their fight

CAMPAIGNERS in St Martin's are vowing to fight revised plans to build houses on agricultural land at La Route des Blanches.

At a public planning meeting in December the then Environment Department's board rejected an application to build 37 homes there by a 3-2 majority.

Neighbours said any development was inappropriate on top quality agricultural land.

Howard and Trudy Mauger have lived next to the field for 42 years.

Mr Mauger said the first attempt to develop it had been made about 12 years ago and he had objected to them all.

'I don't think we should be sacrificing virgin farm land when there are so many alternatives with things such as derelict greenhouse sites,' he said.

Finance worker Jim Gilligan, 45, agreed.

'The field has been rated in the top 11% of farm land in the island in terms of its quality, so why would you want to get rid of it first?' he said.
