Diggers make former bakery crumble

DEMOLITION of the former Warry's bakery in the Grand Bouet has begun.

The Guernsey Housing Association bought the site for £2m. last year and has planning permission to build 20 partial-ownership properties.

But first the former bakery buildings have to be removed.

Bob Froome Ltd is contracted to do the work.

Joint managing director Roger Froome said he hoped it would take about 10 weeks.

'We are following behind them with the demolition.

'We are starting at the back and have taken down two buildings so far.'

The asbestos is in the roof sheeting, not the insulation, and neighbours are not at risk.

Mr Froome said the buildings were steel-framed structures, so quite easy to take down, with the help of hydraulic shears on one of the diggers. The steel will be recycled.
