Longer runway 'will benefit all islanders'

CONTINUE to pay higher prices for airline tickets or invest in a longer runway to bring them down, the Economic Development Committee vice-president Jan Kuttelwascher has said, as he launches another bid to get it extended.

Deputy Kuttelwascher said the idea was due to be discussed by the committee this Thursday, and he was working on the paperwork for it to be included in the capital prioritisation process.

Lengthening the runway – which he suggested would cost '£30m., all in' – would pay for itself over the years, he said, and islanders would directly benefit because other airlines would operate from the island, and they would offer prices far lower than people were used to.

'To my mind, the issue boils down to whether you want to pay lots of money for your tickets, and are we going to keep paying more for a shorter runway, or do you want to pay less for your tickets with a longer runway? The benefit will be for the people of this island.'
