'We cannot let vandals win'

'WE MUST not let vandals win', the La Vallette Legacy Team treasurer has said, as public toilets at the bathing pools were targeted over the weekend at a cost of £600 to the taxpayer.

Guernsey Police are investigating the damage which happened before 2am on Sunday.

A large wooden panel with the door handle still attached, has been completely ripped off the men's toilet door, while the women's toilet door has been left badly damaged too.

Andrew Pouteaux, along with hundreds of volunteers, have pulled together since last year to restore the area as a community project.

While the toilets fall under the responsibility of the Committee for the Environment & Infrastructure, and were not the ones refurbished recently, Mr Pouteaux said it was still upsetting given all the good work being carried out in the surrounding area.

'You become very fatalistic and for every 1,000 people, there is always that one person who is drunk and angry and does whatever.

'But are you going to let that affect your peace and quiet?

'We must not let that person win,' he said.

'We have just got to put it right and keep on working.'
