ST MARTIN'S would be a poorer place were it not for Carolyn Marquis.

Daughter Hannah Marquis said her mother was hard-working, an asset to the parish, and a role model to her and sister Rebecca.

'My mum sits on the parish douzaine, she undertakes inspections, organises and runs events for the whole parish, most recently the Liberation block party and the Queen's 90th birthday celebrations, along with meetings at the St Martins Women's Institute,' said Miss Marquis, who has nominated her for the OCS-sponsored Parish Champion Award.

Mrs Marquis is a keen supporter of Britain in Bloom. She helps with many other jobs such as litter-picking, tidying flower boxes, creating footpaths and helping at the Island Flower Show.

'In her present job at Le Grand Courtil in St Martin's, she has helped develop the gardens and gardening club to help the area feel more homely for the tenants,' said Miss Marquis.

'Since 1994, my mum has been on the committee for the South Show. She decided to get involved to help the show continue to progress so that many more people can enjoy it.

'She tries generally to make the environment around us more special.'
