And his friend, John Le Couteur, said Mr Staples was a prime candidate for nomination for the OCS-sponsored Parish Champion of the Year Award.

Brian is a past president of the St Sampson's Regatta Committee.

He has also been on the Rocquaine Regatta committee now for many years and is one of the hardest-working members.

'He still works full-time for Randall's Brewery despite being more than 70. He was once a French-polisher who worked for a local antiques dealer and he has applied his carpentry skills to very good effect for the Roquaine Regatta, making and maintaining many pieces of equipment.

'He repaired our first full-time committee boat, Betty One, time and time again until it eventually rotted away.

'As a qualified tug of war referee you will see him, whistle in hand, late on regatta day, on the sand below the committee tent surrounded by a huge crowd of people.'

Mr Staples is also known for his association with the Guernsey Rowing Club and particularly the Sark to Jersey Race, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. He is also a passionate football supporter.
