ST PETER'S owes a debt of thanks to its award-winning floral group, according to one man.

Peter Martel, who has been both a douzenier and constable over the course of 32 years, until stepping down at the end of 2015, said the St Peter's Floral Group had done the parish proud and was worthy of nomination for the OCS-sponsored Parish Champion of the Year Award.

'The floral group was set up more than 25 years by David and Jane Russell and I think that some who were involved then are still involved now,' he said.

'The group has grown over the years and bought great success not only to St Peter's but to the whole island.

'For me, the jewel in the crown is the area around the post office, including the Marie de Garis Community Garden, which has been transformed. It's the centre of our parish and looks fantastic.

'The road junction at La Tourelle would never have looked as good as it does if it had been left to the States.

'Then you have the poppy field, the floral displays around the toilets at L'Eree and the avenue of trees at La Croix Cemetery.

'They have also arranged many public events, with a great emphasis on educating youngsters.'
