Pride of Guernsey: 'Passionate about local music'

'TOM tirelessly supports local music both through BBC Introducing Guernsey and on his personal blog and social media,' said Andy Sauvage about his nominee for the Moonpig-sponsored Arts Contribution of the Year Award, Tom Girard.

He reckons the instantly-recognisable Tom – a permanent fixture at every festival and just about every gig in Guernsey (and Sark), as well as performing at a few himself as The Phantom Cosmonaut – provides, through his BBC Introducing show, fantastic exposure for local acts.

'Through his recommendations, several local musicians have been given the opportunity to visit Abbey Road and Maida Vale studios and attend seminars and workshops with high-profile musicians.'

Tom has been the host of BBC Introducing Guernsey for the past seven-and-a-half years but next month marks a decade of him covering new music in the islands for BBC Guernsey.

'Over the nearly eight years of the show we've had at least one act in the studio per month with, I'd estimate, at least 50 of those playing live sessions of one sort or another for us,' said Tom.

'A few artists have gone on to some recognition – we first played a Robyn Sherwell demo back in 2010 and she went on to play the BBC Introducing Stage at Glastonbury in 2015.

'The chance to support and promote new, original music – some of which has gone on to become some of my favourite music – is fantastic.'

What Mr Sauvage finds the most inspiring about his nominee is his integrity, support and enthusiasm when it comes to Guernsey music.

'While BBC Introducing in other regions can be rather passive and wait for acts to approach them, Tom actively seeks out local music and passionately strives to give it as much exposure as possible.'
