Bonnie the seal released into the wild

BONNIE the seal splashing back into the sea was a joyous moment for GSPCA manager Steve Byrne, who said she was the thinnest seal he had seen in his 20 years of animal rescue.

She was released into the wild again off Jethou yesterday and after swimming around the beach went off on her own.

Bonnie was only 14kg when she was found on the island's south coast at the end of January.

Mr Byrne said it was 'phenomenal' to see her back where she belongs. 'It is a joyous moment.'

The GSPCA has looked after her and got her back to strength and she weighs more than 45kg now.

It was particularly moving for animal collection officer Geoff George, who was Bonnie's main carer.

'Sad to see her go, but happy to see her go,' he said.

He remembered how thin and weak she was when rescued.

'She was probably lower than her birth weight,' he said.
