The incident happened just after 3pm.

The rider is understood to have regained consciousness by the time he was taken away by ambulance.

The Health & Safety Executive has started an investigation.

The 56-year-old was part of a group of six people who arrived in Guernsey yesterday morning for this weekend's scooter rally.

Friends said they had stopped near the sea wall to decide which way they would go when the incident happened.

'None of us actually saw it as he was at the back,' said Brian Coupe, 65. 'I looked around and he'd fallen off his bike.

'I thought at first that he'd had something like a heart attack but then I saw that he was covered with mud and water and I wondered what that was all about.'
