'Cancer screening halt must be temporary one'

QUESTIONS will be asked in the States if bowel cancer screening is not resumed following the summer recess, one deputy has said.

With the screening currently suspended owing to a 'lack of capacity', Matt Fallaize, who has twice brought motions before the States for a programme to happen, warned Health & Social Care that while a short-term suspension owing to staffing difficulties could be tolerated and understood, if it carried on, that was not acceptable.

'I am told the budget is still ring-fenced, but if it goes on for months and months, it is pointless being ring fenced if it is not being spent.

'If there is not an appointment the other side of the summer recess, I will be asking questions.

'If it is just a matter of weeks, that is understandable, but this needs to be resolved very quickly.'

About 150 letters have gone out to men and women who were invited to take part in the programme, but have now been told their appointments were not available currently.
