Judges Sue Wood and Malcolm Cleale have both visited the island before and were impressed by the progress that has been made, especially in the area of waste disposal.

They were shown around by estate manager Brett Moore and island gardener Shannon Murray.

It was the first Floral Guernsey experience for Shannon, who has settled in brilliantly the past few months and has already made his mark on the island's gardens and public courtyards.

The judges met the schoolchildren and were shown their tiny playground garden, this year themed on the French flag and Victor Hugo, although the Shakespearean rose bushes, Romeo and Juliet, still hold pride of place after many years.

They also visited the pre-schoolers at their playgroup garden near the village hall. The children do a weekly gardening club for all ages to tend this area.

The judges were very impressed with the island's new recycling efforts.
