Pride of Guernsey: 'Community centre testament to their desire'

COLIN GUILBERT and Tracey Wallis and their team at St Matthew's Church began working on the Cobo Community Centre a few years ago. The church hall just along the road had become rundown and unfit for purpose.

That's according to Matt Nichols, who has proposed Cobo Community Centre for the OCS-sponsored Parish Champion award.

'They worked tirelessly with their plans and fundraising for years,' he said.

'The end result has been a fantastic new building with modern facilities that is of great use to so many groups. Without the efforts of Colin and Tracey and the team there would still be an old, tired, crumbling building sat at the edge of Le Guet that would be used maybe once or twice a week. Instead, it is available throughout the week to anyone and has helped breathe new life into the area.

'My band played a concert back in 2010 to help raise money and so it was fitting that we were asked to play at the new centre to help celebrate the opening and it was an absolute pleasure to do so. The building is a testament to the desire to bring something special to the local community and hard work to make that desire a reality.'
