Pride of Guernsey: 'Quiet, no fuss and hard workers'

ST MARTIN'S would be a poorer place were it not for the labours of John and Marilyn Garnham.

That's the view of Deputy Heidi Soulsby, who has nominated the couple for the OCS-sponsored Parish Champion of the Year award.

'Their efforts mean the parish always looks neat and tidy and just generally cared for,' she said.

'Rarely does a day go by when you don't see them out and about planting, painting, tidying up, weeding, watering, emptying waste bins and just doing anything that makes the parish looked after.'

She said Mr Garnham had a practical mind and had built the blue planters in La Grande Rue. The parish hall garden, which is tended by the couple, has frequently won its category in the annual Floral Guernsey Awards.

'They have also done their bit in trying to clear Japanese knotweed from around the parish,' said Deputy Soulsby.

The Garnhams had been doing this work now for many years.

'St Martin's is very lucky to have such dedicated residents among its number and their quiet, no fuss, hard work approach is something that deserves recognition.'
