And it has said that its inspection of the premises was sparked by an independent complaint.

The HSE, which issued three prohibition notices relating to gas and electrical supplies and the storage of chemicals, will have to give the all-clear and check the necessary work has been undertaken before it lifts the notices and allows Education to re-open the rooms.

Chief health and safety officer Robin Gonard said the concerns that triggered its inspection, which was carried out last Thursday, did not come directly from the Committee for Education, Sport & Culture.

But he could not provide further details about where the complaint came from.

He did confirm the serious nature of the risk associated with this kind of action, which made the labs a no-go area, but said he could not elaborate further on the issues, with the case still active.

'By the nature of having prohibition notices, there is a risk, and the risk is of serious personal injury,' he said.
