Deputy Jonathan Le Tocq actually chaired a round table meeting in Brussels for European microstates four years ago, he said last week, at which the likes of Monaco, Andorra, San Marino, Liechtenstein, the Faroe Islands and Gibraltar were all represented.

All currently have a relationship with the EU through a sponsoring member nation.

Deputy Le Tocq said that the assembly 'demonstrated a certain appetite for some kind of microstate constitution and trading agreement with the EU'.

Since then Guernsey's external affairs civil servants have been watching developments with microstates within Europe.
