The brainchild of Antoine Delafargue, the submarine, which has an internal area of just two cubic metres, will be home to him and Michael de Lagarde for up to a week as they cross from Plymouth to St Malo early in August, as part of the Pilot Fish Project.

'We should be coming near the south-west coast of Guernsey – not too close, though, because of the currents – they can be quite strong,' said Mr Delafargue.

'To train before we go, we are spending 24 hours inside it.

'The maximum depth we will go to is 120 metres, but most of the time it will be around 80 metres. We are going to photograph and film the seabed.

'Once we are finished we are going to give the data over to researchers and exhibit it.'

All the food, electrical equipment and oxygen needed will be stored inside the craft with them for the duration of the 250km journey, which is expected to take around seven days.
