Michael Firth, 18, was presented with the top student award at the Welbeck College's annual inspection, which brought together parents, students, and a number of military VIPs.

The sword is awarded to the student whose engagement in key areas of personal development, taking into account academic attainment, fitness and personal officer qualities, is viewed as the most outstanding in the college's upper sixth year group.

Mr Firth said the prize was the perfect way to celebrate his time at college.

'I have enjoyed my time at Welbeck, and receiving this award is a real honour and the perfect way to finish two years of hard work,' he said.

'My thanks go especially to the military team for all their encouragement this year.'

Mr Firth said he would now study mechanical engineering at Southampton University, before undergoing training to become an engineering officer in the Royal Navy.
