George Domaille, pictured, said an agreement with the States and the golf clubs should guarantee it a sound footing for the next 25 years, thanks to the help from deputies and a working party.

'The job became more difficult in recent years as people's expectations became higher and the States kept us poor,' he said.

When Mr Domaille, 86, joined the council 42 years ago it received a £250 grant from the then Tourist Board.

By 1991, this had increased to £1,500 under the former Board of Administration while the golf course only bought in £100 a year rent.

President for the past 28 years, he said he thought it was the right time to retire.
