Current A&E doctors could be part of in-house service

UNCERTAINTY surrounds how Accident & Emergency will be staffed in the future as negotiations between GPs and Health & Social Care continue.

The States committee announced on Sunday that it was to take the A&E service, which is currently operated by Primary Care Company Limited, in-house from September at no extra cost.

A signed share purchase agreement of PCCL, which was set-up by GPs, means Health has affectively bought the company for £3.

British Medical Association spokesman and former PCCL chairman Dr Brian Parkin, who has been involved in negotiations, said GPs did not know at this stage whether they were going to be involved in future staffing or not.

'I think a number of us would like to still be involved and I think the new consultant would like us to be,' he said.

Although he did not know for certain, he believed the plan was for it to mainly be staffed by assistants and possibly more consultants if they were approved.
