Aurigny 'UK's third-worst short haul airline for delays'

AURIGNY has been dubbed the UK's third- worst short-haul airline for delays, but its CEO has bosses have blamed its poor statistics on an unprecedented amount of fog.

Consumer magazine Which? yesterday released new analysis showing almost a quarter of the 1.9 million flights to or from the UK between April 2015 and March 2016 were delayed by 15 minutes or more.

Aurigny scored third-worst among short-haul airlines as its average delay time was 17 minutes, with 1.3% of flights being delayed by more than three hours.

The release of the statistics follows a fortnight of disruption for island travel, which has brought calls for more advanced landing equipment at the airport.

Aurigny's chief executive officer Mark Darby said the Which? analysis included extraordinary events, which included matters beyond the airline's control, including poor weather and problems at airports.

Gatwick was rated the second-worst airport for short-haul delays.

'70% of our delays over three hours have been due weather,' said Mr Derby.

'That is the major issue.

'The second-worst airport is Gatwick and obviously a good chunk of our flying is Gatwick.

'This year we are running double the number of incidents of fog.'
