DRUNKEN comedy show heckler Shane Grimley has been jailed for seven months after disrupting an event at Beau Sejour in the spring.

Grimley, 29, of 13, Rue Jamouneau, St Peter Port, 'played to the crowd', the Magistrate's Court heard, as centre staff tried to get him out of the theatre.

He and his girlfriend were among the 400-strong audience and he was heckling the warm-up act in an inappropriate way.

Duty manager Lee Sebire and senior recreation assistant Paul Jones tried to deal with Grimley. Unbeknown to Mr Sebire, Grimley had been refused service at the bar because of his drunken state.

Mr Sebire approached the defendant with a view to moving him to the end of the aisle but this was misinterpreted by the audience. Grimley then began waving his arms around and 'playing to the crowd.'

Grimley was bailed to appear in court on 6 June but he left the island and went to his native Northern Ireland and did not return until 21 July when he was arrested at the harbour.

He had a substantial number of previous convictions both in the UK and Guernsey where his last conviction, for assault, had attracted a prison sentence.

Grimley was sentenced to five months in prison for using threatening behaviour towards Mr Sebire and Mr Jones plus two months, consecutive, for jumping court bail. He admitted both offences.
