'Traffic must be addressed in the Leale's Yard development'

LIFE can be breathed into the Bridge with the Leale's Yard development, businesses have said, but traffic issues must be focused on.

As planners gave a provisional green light to the long-awaited £100m. development on the currently derelict Bridge site – subject to final approval at an open planning meeting next week – businesses have largely welcomed the cash injection to the wider area.

Unlike a previous application, dating back to 2011, the development is more residential led – rather than retail-focused – with a total of 412 new homes now a step closer to reality.

Arcadia owner Paul de la Haye said the current state of the site benefitted no one.

'It is not doing anyone any good like it is now,' he said.

'I think it is better it is residential led, as we have enough shops in the island, and more would add to the dilution for customers.

'It will be good to have more things going on in the Bridge, my only concern is the parking, as they were talking about having it pedestrianised.'

The open planning meeting is on Wednesday 24 August at Beau Sejour at 9.15am for a 9.30am start.
