It comes as key figures within the island's sports scene call for further investment in sport locally and stress that spending funding in the right way was key to results.

Education, Sport & Culture vice-president Carl Meerveld said the committee did not have any immediate plans to change the funding arrangements for the Guernsey Sports Commission, but a lottery could be one option for securing funds in future years.

'It is very likely that a dedicated lottery will be used to help raise funds for the hosting of the 2021 Island Games and there is no reason why this could not be used as one option for additional funding to be made available for sport in the future,' he said.

The comments come as Team GB secured a historic second place in the medals table at Rio, with the nation's ever-growing success credited to years of sustained investment.
