Go-ahead for the developments at Leale's Yard and Admiral Park are being celebrated as a major boost to the island's construction industry and wider economy.

And it all comes as the latest figures show that the construction industry suffered the biggest decline of all sectors last year – with an estimated 6.1% drop in output – according to GDP estimates for 2015 out yesterday.

The long-awaited, hugely delayed and anticipated Leale's Yard development will see more than 400 residential units, new retail units and public spaces created on the disused piece of land behind the Bridge shop front.

The Channel Islands Co-operative-led scheme had previously pushed for a retail-led scheme, but following the global economic meltdown, went back to the drawing board and came up with a residential heavy proposal instead.

Admiral Park will see new office complexes, a cinema, restaurant, hotel, creche, more than 700 parking spaces and an entirely new traffic layout created as part of a £70m. development.

Both builds received unanimous approval.
