Accident setback for Anthony

THE recovery of a Guernsey boy who underwent life-changing surgery has hit a setback following an accident which saw the metal pins in his leg snap.

Anthony McMahon had just returned to the island after successful surgery in Florida which lengthened his left leg by 8cm.

But while at a friend's house, his friend's four-year-old sister accidentally fell onto the two top holding pins fixed into his pelvis.

Later that day his mum, Kerry Croxton, said it became clear something was seriously wrong and the youngster told her he could not move.

'Tears were streaming down his face and he remained motionless, holding himself up on his hands,' she said. 'Ian (Anthony's father) was frantically asking him what was wrong and I heard Anthony tell him it was like TNT, maybe not TNT but like dynamite exploding.'

Aware of a critical situation developing, Mr McMahon noticed blood pouring out of his son's hip from both pin sites.

He said the force of the child landing on Anthony had bent and weakened the pins until eventually they snapped under pressure inside his left leg.
