The move has been welcomed in Herm, where Thomas Jackson, pictured, worked as a waiter and barman during the 2012 and 2013 season, as the community continued to come to terms with his death.

Mr Jackson, 30, suffered what proved to be fatal injuries during an attack in Queensland on 23 August, as he tried to shield Mia Ayliffe-Chung, who died during the attack.

He was nominated for the bravery award by Australian politician, the Premier of Queensland Annastacia Palaszczuk, who had written to the Australian Bravery Decorations Council to put him forward for his courageous actions.

Herm chief executive officer Jonathan Watson said it was news that would be welcomed by those who had known Mr Jackson locally.
