Leale's Yard traffic lights or filter? Opinion is divided

THE question of whether traffic lights or a filter would work better to control traffic when Leale's Yard is developed continues to divide opinion, even on the streets of the Bridge.

One person said traffic lights would be the only way to ensure vehicles would definitely stop.

The busy junction between North Side, the Bridge and Vale Avenue is currently managed by a roundabout.

But under the Channel Island Co-op's plans for Leale's Yard, a new road will be added to the junction.

The Development & Planning Authority has said a report will be commissioned as to whether traffic lights or a filter system would be better.

St Sampson's constable Rob Broome and Deputy Lester Queripel have both said they would be in favour of a filter.

But some who work or shop in the area disagreed and felt that a filter would not be enough.

Lucy Barlow has worked at the chip shop, North Side Plaice, for six years.

She said drivers already ignored the Vale Avenue zebra crossing.

'I think if there was traffic lights there, crossing would be a lot easier,' she said.

'But you have to think of the congestion as well – would it work better than a filter?'

Liz Timms has worked in the Citizens Advice Bureau shop since it opened eight years ago and said there was a lot of near- misses at the junction, as well as some crashes.

'We hear the screeching of brakes and the blowing of horns,' she said.

'I think traffic lights would be better than a roundabout. A filter would not work – there's too much traffic for it to be able to cope.'
