'Teachers know best on selection'

'LISTEN to the teachers', politicians have been urged, as unions attack any moves to try to retain selective education and U-turn on the last States' decision.

National Union of Teachers regional secretary Andy Woolley has given a warning over the pitfalls of bringing forward new forms of selection, which would still be open to coaching and 'teaching to the exam' and could cause major disruption in

primary schools.

His comments come after Education, Sport & Culture member Deputy David de Lisle said he was against radically changing the secondary education system.

Mr Woolley, however, called on politicians to listen to the overwhelming view of the experts in this area – the teaching professionals – who are against selection with all its drawbacks.
