When he arrived, accompanied by Lt-Governor Vice Admiral Sir Ian Corder and Bailiff Sir Richard Collas, primary students were lined up and waving flags.

The Earl, whose visit marked the 60th anniversary of the award, made his way along the rows of excited pupils and spoke to some of them before making his way into the hall.

La Mare High head teacher Vicky Godley said it was an 'absolute privilege' to have Prince Edward visit.

'It is really exciting for the primary and secondary schools.

'There was a buzz around the school. It is memory-making, something they will look back on.'

As the Earl of Wessex left the school, he took a moment to speak to parents who had come to collect their children.
