Thatching part of Oatlands revamp

FIFTY years should elapse before Oatlands' shop roof need to be replaced, the thatcher doing so has said.

Tristan Johnson, owner of the company of the same name, is in the island for a month with a team of six as they place some 25 tonnes of thatch in total on the two roofs being replaced.

Mr Johnson said that, although hay may seem antiquated, it offered many benefits.

His company had worked on every thatched roof in the island, he added, and the job offered plenty of chance for travel – even if the working days were long.
