Limit on parking is now less restrictive

CONTROVERSIAL maximum parking measures were eased yesterday in a move that lifts the cap for developers.

An amendment lifted maximum caps under the IDP policy, which originally would have seen new one-, two- and some three-bed houses limited to just one parking space and offices restricted to either one space per 70 square metres or 100 square metres, depending on their type.

The approved higher caps include those allowing homes with four or fewer rooms to have two spaces each. For offices it is now one space per 40 square metres or 50 square metres, depending on the type.

The amendment was led by Deputy Al Brouard, who urged members to support the higher caps and warned this was the first time the island had looked at introducing such upper limits.

'We need to be realistic with these standards,' he said. 'We do have to live in the world today. We are making quite a change going from minimum standards to maximum. I think we have to afford developers the slight flexibility it gives.'

Deputy Jan Kuttelwascher said he would support the amendment but believed it was still 'woefully inadequate'.

Deputy Victoria Oliver echoed concerns that even these improvements were not enough.

'I personally don't feel this amendment goes far enough,' she said.
