£25,000 needed for Town Christmas lights

WITHOUT guarantees of sponsorship to support the St Peter Port Christmas Lights charity, the constables and douzaine will need to consider whether it should close and responsibility be handed over.

More than £25,000 needs to be raised to erect and take down the lights and to replace more lights and infrastructure next year.

The constables announced the charity has a new chair, douzenier Jacquie Robin.

The constables said good progress has been made during the last two weeks.

'A sponsor who offered money to purchase new light arrays for High Street has also agreed to cover the installation costs of the new power supply and infrastructure needed to enable lights to be erected in Fountain Street.

'The new High Street lights have been ordered and we hope work will be finished in Fountain Street in time for this year's display, where some of the old High Street lights will be re-used.

'The committee is also in talks with a sponsor for new lights in the Arcade as these lights have been problematic in wet weather for the past two years.'

It said the charity is now depleted of funds and is in 'desperate need' to raise money to cover more than £25,000.

Donations can be made through its website www.christmaslights.gg.
