IWV: four-district option is favourite

AN ISLAND-WIDE voting referendum could happen as early as September.

Detailed proposals for how the referendum will work, with the committee behind it now showing signs it favours a four-district option, are due to be submitted for debate at the beginning of next year.

Work began earlier this year in planning for the landmark public vote, after the previous States decided there would be a referendum on electing all deputies on an island-wide basis at the next general election in 2020.

That election is also likely to be the first in which 18-year-olds could stand as candidates, with the States Assembly and Constitution Committee working on plans to change the minimum age requirement.

Sacc has been looking at ways of coming up with the proposals for the referendum, including the precise question or questions that will be asked and the legislation that will be needed.

Its president, Deputy Matt Fallaize, was behind the amendment for a public referendum on IWV.
