Social welfare reform delay 'morally wrong'

NOT introducing new social welfare reforms to end 'intolerable' levels of poverty is 'morally wrong', a Castel deputy has said, as islanders warn against major delays.

Scrutiny Management Committee president Chris Green was among those yesterday to speak of their disappointment at Employment & Social Security's announcement that the landmark changes would not be coming into force as planned from the start of the year.

The reforms were set to improve the position of around 1,200 of the poorest in the community.

'I think it is appalling,' Deputy Green said.

'When you come out with proposals, where the test that applies for poverty is living in intolerable conditions and if you say you cannot afford to fund a benefit system to prevent that intolerable position, it is morally wrong.'
