Cruise charge 'not too high'

NEW security charges for cruise ship passengers who come ashore in Guernsey will act as extra income for the harbour, the harbour master has said.

The £1 charge, to be introduced next year, is expected to bring in an extra £125,000 a year, with up to £1,515 being made per vessel.

The announcement has had a positive reception from marine organisations.

Harbour master Captain Chad Murray said the new charges were going to be levied because they saw 'strong potential' for the harbour – which acts as 'an enabler to businesses' all around the island – to benefit from the extra income.

'We worked with our colleagues at Visit Guernsey and with the industry to ensure we could introduce this smoothly, with cruise operators having plenty of notice so they could incorporate the charges into their costs,' he said.
