Salerie layout 'challenges car takes priority culture'

LONG-AWAITED safety changes to the road layout at Salerie Corner were hailed a much-needed improvement yesterday as the new crossing officially opened.

Despite delays and spiralling costs, it is seen by some as a major step towards shifting the island's culture to one that gives cyclists and pedestrians priority.

Those within the cycling community also yesterday spoke of their delight that changes had been made to improve safety at the junction following a fatal accident in April 2013.

Environment & Infrastructure president Barry Brehaut was confident the project would be a success.

'This is fundamental to challenging a culture which nine times out of 10 in Guernsey gives priority to the driver.'
