More than 80 people packed the church hall. Apart from one vote against and one abstention, everyone voted in favour of the work.

The project will cost more than half a million pounds. Money from the constables' account, the church congregation and the rectory's rent will cover £267,000 of the work, but the rest will come from the loan.

Torteval douzenier and church repairs committee member Andrew Sauvarin said there had been a lot of work done to inform the residents of the parish, including sending out leaflets to all the households and the costing options. The first half hour of the meeting was spent detailing the project further. But there was just half an hour of questions before the vote was taken.

'We are very relieved,' said Mr Sauvarin. 'We were expecting more push back, but there was only one person against. I think the information helped a lot.'
