Every deputy was present for the vote on whether to stick with March's agreement to scrap the selection exam and move to an all- ability system.

The vote was 21 in favour of keeping that resolution and 19 against.

Teachers in the chamber gallery said the decision was the best result for the island's children.

Deputy Le Pelley said he knew the vote would be close.

'Obviously I feel disappointed, as it will mean the end of the Grammar School,' he said.
