Bonfire restriction plans splits opinion in parishes

PROPOSALS to reduce air pollution through a ban of non-garden waste bonfires have split the opinions of parish constables, with reactions ranging from 'a help to the environment' to 'a complete waste of time'.

Environment & Infrastructure has proposed the introduction of a law to the States, aimed at lowering air pollution levels, black smoke emissions and improving public health.

This includes prohibiting bonfires to dry garden waste on weekdays only, and organised social events such as Guy Fawkes' night bonfires.

303 complaints have been received by The director of Environmental Health and Pollution has received 303 complaints in the last two years over the burning of black bag waste, kitchen appliances, paint tins and building rubble on residential premises around the island.

However, the proposed legislation has received a mixed response from parish constables.
