The Times reports on island's Holocaust role

GUERNSEY'S role in the Holocaust made the national headlines on Saturday when an article in The Times stated the island had 'finally opened up about its Nazi past'.

The story centred around comments from former deputy Elis Bebb, who led a petition at the beginning of the year to ensure young islanders were taught about the island's links with the Holocaust.

Following backing from the States Assembly it will mean from September 2017 the curriculum will include the stories of three Jewish women who were deported by local authorities and sent to their deaths in Auschwitz-Birkenau.

At the time Deputy Bebb faced some criticism over his comments about the Holocaust, particularly when he publicly said the island 'bore some responsibility for the Holocaust'.

Speaking to The Times he said: 'This really hit a nerve and many people thought I was blaming them as Nazi collaborators.

'It was a really visceral reaction and I thought, "something is wrong here when we can't talk about what happened 70 years later".'
